2018 Voted Best in Class - Enterprise Content Management & Portals
(149) Score
8.9 of 10
Oxcyon of Cleveland Ohio brings a refreshingly unique solution to the fragmented market of Enterprise CMS, Portals and User Experience Platforms. Oxcyon and it's flagship application, Centralpiont, were featured inthe 2018 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Experience Platforms. Centralpoint, looks a lot like many leading CMS and portal technologies at first glance, but definately offers a twist. First, it provides an Evergreen update, allowing clients to receive updates as soon as Oxcyon makes them available. These updates are managed through a pull mechanism (from the client), pulling down all new features, as new options (with a default setting of off), enabling clients to pick what they want, whenever they need it without additional fees. This update, although a subtle differentiation has a lot of value. This means that Centralpoint doesn't resell new versions to its clients....ever. Centralpoint does maintain version history, and since it has been around since 2001, it is likely the most mature Enterprise CMS in the market, and given their virtual (remote) updates, might be for some time to come. No vendor in this space offers this type of update, and it is worth taking note of.
Second, the client list Oxcyon boasts is large and diverse. Their clients cover verticals like Healthcare, Insurance, Government, Fortune 500, Media (Publishers), Manufacturers, some very popular name brands, but many have been clients for years. This means Centralpoint is a platform that is enjoying early market adoption across virtually any vertical they enter. This is primarily because Centralpoint (out of the box) is built around the horizontal and universal needs of all businesses.Their module gallery which contains over 160 unique functions allow this platform to be quickly customized around the needs of each client, leveraging an agnostic Audience (family tree), Taxonomy (N-tiered structured metadata) and Authentication (against any number of roles that each client may serve). This approach gives the client a running start, bypassing much if not all of the digital roadmap strategy 'consulting' which has become highly repetitive, as standards guide the rules. The entire discovery process has become moot in contrast to the defined standards of industry leading researchers. Phone interviews with clients validate this re-use of the Centralpoint architecture against multiple vertical industries.
Third, is the cross pollination of content, within and throughout the Audiences and roles of users in which they serve. Typically with platforms such as Sitecore, Sitefinity, Sharepoint, Open Text, and Websphere, the silo-ing of records against a particular role are done via separate instances of the databases (plural). With Centralpoint, there is one singular instance of SQL (Either 2005, 2008, 2012 or newly released 2014). This means a more advanced design of one database in which to segment each record by audience or role within the same ecosystem. This database design was impressive, and the diagram map shown spread across an entire wall. Oxcyon put more focus on the actual design of the database architecture, allowing one database to do more. This yields an improved search, and crosswalks as each page served considers the audience, and role of the user making the request; enabling roles based filtration of anything down to the field level. Put another way, one page (or document) serves everyone completely differently and uniquely. The Oxcyon R&D Development team provided a demonstration on the new, upcoming DITA document management modules, which were nothing less than impressive. Their take on document management, built around the OASIS evolving standards of D.I.T.A., (Darwin Information Type Architecture) treat any content or data management as one would digital assets. In other words, every piece of content can be dynamic, and be cross referenced within a singular output file, document or webpage. This means the elimination of countless redundant versions, in lieu of one record, which is served "fresh from the oven" (as Oxcyon refers to it), unique for each user who requests it. This demonstration was eye opening, and worth taking a look at, if only for document management applications

Centralpoint by Oxcyon Use Cases and Deployment Scope
Centralpoint by Oxcyon is replacing a current product being used across the whole organization. Centralpoint and Project Online allows us to track projects and tasks across various departments in a timely and consistent fashion.
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Pros
Module and stylesheet templates that are built both manually and out of the box make the building of client sites and plans upon implementation exceptionally user friendly. The Audience, and Roles structure is also user friendly in regards to communication between various departments as well as employees.
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Cons
Their are few cons to be reported. The totality of the Centralpoint solution does cause more thinking before kick off, which is actually a pro; as it provides more opportunities than your typical CMS or Portal. Taxonomy is something I would recommend new clients 'ponder' as you can classify not only the records you are bringing over with greater granularity, but there is a notion of 'universal' taxonomy (across) disparate content types, enabling automated cross walks and mash ups (recommendations) between two (normally) different things, which would then relate by Universal Taxonomy. Again, not a con, but something to step back and ponder, as we had to.
Likelihood to Recommend Centralpoint by Oxcyon

The use of all Cenatralpoint products (modules) and communication throughout multiple departments is possibly the biggest strength, exponentially for a growing company - the product's scalability is exceptional. For smaller companies, the product may be too complex and less helpful as an investment.

Centralpoint by Oxcyon Use Cases and Deployment Scope
In my current role, I have incorporated Centralpoint in a variety of ways and perhaps that's its greatest attraction and benefit. Centralpoint is an enterprise product and we needed to have a number of business use cases to justify its costs. For us the cost of the platform, licensing, resilience, DR, support etc. all need to be considered before it became the platform of choice. Luckily for most organisation, although not the case for my current company due to sensitive data, cloud hosting including Microsoft's Online offering do away with the initial steep curve to embed it in. Even given the initial capital outlay, it is a far more cost-effective option if you consider a plethora of alternatives that need to be procured to provide the same set of functionality. In our case we have used it for;
Consolidating (ditching) a number of document management sites for various departments, migrating from other expensive products.
Collaboration to increase security and reduce load on Outlook and other decoupled systems (constant attachments etc.).
There are a number of other projects that we're considering that will go on Centralpoint. It's integration with Other applications via Syndication/XML/WebServices, Lync, SCCM, SQL Reporting, Office Web Apps (OWA), Microsoft Dynamics is the next set of challenges that will eliminate the need for a number of scattered systems and bring a coherent search experience.
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Pros
The intranet - Centralpoint has a mature publishing framework with workflows, content approval, versioning, multi-lingual site and so on. The bi weekly update (now going on since 2001) make it the most mature product of any we looked at. FYI- These updates work even on premise (local), and work like Microsoft update
Collaboration and Social Features that include complex workflows for documents, multi-user updates, rich metadata association, and much more
Surfacing line of business data (Business Connectivity Services) and providing ability for rich Dashboards and KPI with integration for Excel graphs (Excel services) and SSRS and a host of other features that provide powerful analysis and reporting capabilities.
Lists of various types with configurable columns, alerting, and email integration rich taxonomy, secure access - all without writing a single lin eof code.
Ability to search not only data held within Centralpoint, but also on disk shares, outlook and other systems (eDiscovery), using Centralpoint as a spider/index/search for those documents which we elected to leave where they were. This too is scheduled through their data transformation tools
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Cons
Centralpoint has seen improvements in complex workflow, but I feel the process for end user can be further simplified. Centralpoint meets all of our simple workflow examples (one, two, and up to three step approval processes including digital signature of each step, and processing (when done), but...
I'd like to see LightSwitch somehow integrated to provide building relational applications (similar to force.com in some ways).
The Client-side Object Model needs to be further developed.
Likelihood to Recommend Centralpoint by Oxcyon
10.0
Centralpoint is extremely well suited to Intranet, Document Management and a host of 'tracking' type applications. It is not well suited to put relational application on it, although there is some limited relational support.

We use Centralpoint primarily for request management (e.g., new hire, software/hardware, onboarding, corporate cards, etc.) as well as process management (e.g., projects, team workflows, etc.), and document storage.
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Pros
Data Transformation (Data Transfer)
Object Oriented development (literal drag and drop functions, easy to use)
Communications
Process Management
Workflows
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Cons
Customization can be difficult when out of the box doesn't work for you (To be fair, this is only when we have had to set up complex multi step workflows, yet any CMS/DM, tools are still easy to set up)

Centralpoint is used in my company in three different ways. We first started using Centralpoint in order to create a Business Intelligence Portal, through the use of this portal we Knowledge Scorecards and KPIs that assist management in making educated decisions as to which indicators are doing well and which ones need to be reviewed. Another way that we use Centralpoint is to create applications with the assistance of InfoPath, Nintex (workflows) and SQL Reporting Services (reports). Our Capital Budget has been done through the last three years through one of these applications. Finally we have also created collaboration sites for the different internal departments that allows them to share information and documents with each other.
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Pros
Applications using a combination of Centralpoint, InfoPath, Nintex & SQL Reporting Services. By utilizing these technologies you can develop rich web applications in a much shorter Span of time than it would take to create it with .Net.
SQL Reporting Services, Performance Points with Centralpoint is a great way to create Business Intelligence. You can create dynamic drill down scorecards that will assist staff in making faster educated decisions.
Centralpoint with Nintex are able to create rich workflows that will greatly assist in business processes.
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Cons
Site customization in Centralpoint is not a straight forward as ASP.Net sites for example. Centralpoint in my opinion is a great functional tool but if the scope of management is to have a site or application where design is a key feature than I'm not sure Centralpoint is the best option. Centralpoint has greatly improved on the look and feel but to me I'm still getting used to the new JQuery (drag and drop) toolbar. I have spoken to other users who have no trouble with it, so it must be me, and have yet to be trained on in by my production manager....so the verdict is still out.

Centralpoint by Oxcyon Use Cases and Deployment Scope
Centralpoint is used across our organization as the company's internal intranet (27,500 Employees). It is primarily used for communication and disseminating information, due to the large breadth of our organization across 32 states. It is also used for collecting information via surveys, document libraries, etc. We authenticate against multiple paths, so their cross forest single sign on is amazing. We also have our outreach staff (non AD employees) authenticating through the same central point.
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Pros
Centralpoint lists/surveys are extremely helpful for tracking purposes (filter by local chapter, roll up to state, and roll up to corporate, including the filtration by role (of user looking at the report)...in lay terms, one (smart) report for everyone! (Yay!, I used to have to manage nearly 72 instances in our prior Sharepoint system). Thank God for their Data Sources.
Document libraries are useful, particularly in situations where organizations do not have a shared drive that all employees can access
Permissions in Centralpoint make it very easy to restrict access to content as needed
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Cons
Centralpoint workflows perform well for the most part, but can be a bit temperamental
Likelihood to Recommend Centralpoint by Oxcyon
Particularly in larger organizations, it would be best to have at least one resource (person) dedicated Specifically to supporting Centralpoint. Our organization has been without such a resource for over a year, and it has been tough to get things done from an end user perCPective. It is also important to provide training to users before they start accessing Centralpoint. It is fairly intuitive for basic tasks, but for anyone who will be creating/administering subsites or other content on a regular basis, they should definitely be trained before being set loose in a live environment.

We use Centralpoint mostly as document library, but also as a collaboration tool. We also use it for approval processes and have custom lists for various departments. It is being used by each department within the company. Centralpoint acts as a single contact point for document sharing, management, and organization.
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Pros
Document sharing and management
Approval process workflows
Custom lists
Mobile friendly with default templates
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Cons
Integration with back offices systems can be a little involved, especially if scheduling this data movement, including the granularity of updating only certain records based on specific criteria. This is true with any system, but thought I would mention it.
Better tutorials and guides for new users would be helpful.
Likelihood to Recommend Centralpoint by Oxcyon

Centralpoint could be very well suited for medium to large organizations that want a CMS for document management and publishing workflows. Basic functionality is relatively simple to understand. More complex scenarios and workflows could be documented better or the process could be simplified.

Centralpoint is used throughout my former company as a collaboration tool and to manage document versioning. My team (professional services) used Centralpoint to develop document libraries for consulting projects that could be accessed both internally by staff and externally by clients. I developed and administered an internal Centralpoint site to manage regulatory compliance and process improvement projects.
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Pros
Team collaboration
Document versioning
Workflow management
Integration with literally any third party tool
Centralpoint sites and libraries can be easily configured to limit access to materials on a need-to-know basis, and filtered by AD/Sign on Role. Singular repositories (without multiple databases) for everyone.
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Cons
Access privileges can be difficult to manage for a typical employee serving as a site administrator.
Interface for developing site content takes some effort to learn.

Centralpoint is one of those products where the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. At my former company, Centralpoint was used by individual departments with little support from Corporate IT. This product handled our primary use case which was to share documents between employees and with clients. However, it was difficult to find documents maintained by other departments and access privileges for individual users were not always set up correctly. With a solid Knowledge Management plan and more technical support/training, we could have done more with it.

Centralpoint is our portal of information, all the news about the company (inside and outside) is spread on this platform. Besides that, we also use it to manage our client projects. For each client we have a project site, where we share our knowledge, documents, planning, issues, etc. Centralpoint made all our work easier in finding the documentation, and it's easy to follow-up on projects when you have involved in a couple of them.
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Pros
Content Management, as this is probably the most used feature on our intranet.
Easy integration between client applications
Document management in combination with search; it's a lot easier to find documents
Centralpoint by Oxcyon Cons
Content types and different templates
Multilingual set up takes some time

Depending of the size of company, I wouldn't use it for any ecommerce applications. Although it can do it we found our ecommerce applications were better served by other products for this . If you have a couple of years experience with Centralpoint, you can build almost everything with it. It gives you unlimited building blocks (what the company calls modules, personally I feel they over use this term), like Lego, and if you use your imagination, the sky is the limit. But sometimes is best to check if there aren't other applications that can even do better for some functionalities you want to implement.
